Western Reserve District Newsletter              June/July 2006

District Superintendent                                    Larry L Marshall

Dear Friends,

As we approach our gathering for Annual Conference, let me say a word regarding the Day Apart.  Traditionally, this has been a time when we can receive  inspiration and information around local church vitality and effectiveness.  This year, Tom Bandy will lead the morning session.  Tom has worked with Bill Easum for a number of years.  He has consulted with hundreds of churches and annual conferences.

On Wednesday afternoon, there will be numerous workshops that hopefully will provide practical help in certain areas of ministry.

In a day when local churches continue to struggle with “not enough” (money, young people, youth, etc) it is important to learn about new ways to reach new people.

I pray you will set aside Wednesday, June 24th and attend the “Day Apart” at Lakeside.   See you there!

                                                                                     Yours in Christ,

                                                                      Larry

2nd Chili Cook-Off

Festival of Caring

How would you like to be the next winner of the EOC Chili Cook-off?  This is very simple.  Just bring a crockpot full of your favorite “chili and the recipe” to the Festival of Caring on Saturday, September 16th at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Mansfield, between 9 and 9:30 AM.  The judging will begin following the Worship Service.  There will be two categories for judging:  1) “Judges Award” and 2) “People’s Choice Award.”  An entry form is available in the 2006 Festival of Caring Booklet or by contacting Diane Rogers (800/831-3972 x135 at the Conference Office.  This is a fun event and a good way to sample the cooking from those in EOC.  For additional information, please contact Jackie Clark, 330/456-1026.

2005 Lay Speaking Laity of the Year

Phil Armstrong from the Wildare UMC!

He has been God’s faithful servant for many years.  He is a devoted husband, father and friend to many people.  If you ask Phil how he is doing, his answer is always, “I’m Blessed.”  He gives God the glory for everything in his life and is a true witness.

Since 1976 Phil has lived in many different states and always being involved in the church.  He has served as Sunday School Supt, Junior High SS teacher, Trustee, Adult SS teacher, lay leader, administrative council chair, worship committee, PPR, lay speaker, choir member, communion server to shut-ins, Walk to Emmaus and the Kairos prison ministry.

Phil has been married for 34 years.  They have two grown children Megen and Robert.  Together they have raised two 16 year olds, Stephanie and then 2 years later Dale who were runaways and are today part of their family.

He is currently supporting his wife while she is in the seminary.

Phil is now working on Kairos and Emmaus in Virginia near Norfolk.

Phil is still hard at work following God’s lead.  He is definitely someone people can admire.  His walk with Christ is a true testimony for all.  He is a very strong believer that it all works together in God’s time.  His attitude is always up even when he gets discouraged at times.  He remembers that it’s God’s work not his.
